about wmgs

The Western Michigan Genealogical Society was founded in 1954 with the purpose of preserving and making available for genealogical research the records of our ancestors; encouraging and assisting members in genealogical research; promoting the exchange of knowledge; and encouraging the deposit of genealogical records in established libraries and archives.

Please visit wmgs.org for more information about the society. Contact the Webmaster at webmaster@wmgs.org.

History

When founded, the Western Michigan Genealogical Society was the only Genealogical Organization outside of the Detroit area. WMGS gradually focused on covering the communities in Kent County and the contiguous counties of Barry, Allegan, Ottawa, Muskegon, Newaygo, Montcalm, and Ionia. Since 1954, other local societies have been organized in these areas and most are still currently active.

WMGS over time focused more & more on Grand Rapids and Kent County. This was a natural progression because of the Society's long standing relationship with the Grand Rapids Public Library and the effective activities of the newer area Genealogical & Historical Organizations in the region.

This project is developed as a means of leveraging the considerable WMGS resources as a more regional organization to provide resources & support to the surrounding West Michigan groups as a whole.
